What makes someone open your email?

One could arugue that it all comes down to the subject line.
Today I received over 50+ promotion/social emails. That is how my Google inbox categorizes them. Most of these never get opened. Why? (beside the I don't have time) But mostly because they just didn't catch my eye - here is what did over the last few days:
- Facebook Copies Snapchat | Social You Should Know - opened because who doesn't like a good controversry story?
- 20 Creative Ways to Use Social Media for Storytelling - I bought it hook, line and sinker! 20 ways, I need to know these secrets.
- Top 17 Local SEO Problems + 17 Simple Hacks to Solve Them - Maybe I could pick up some local SEO stuff that I don't know, sounds simple to fix issues.
